Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors is one of the defining albums of her career and a landmark of classic country songwriting. Originally released in 1971, Parton’s eighth solo studio album pairs deeply personal storytelling with traditional country, honky-tonk and Appalachian influences, capturing the warmth, wit and emotional honesty that would make her one of American music’s most enduring songwriters.

At its heart is the autobiographical “Coat of Many Colors,” inspired by Parton’s childhood and the coat her mother made from scraps of fabric.
