Bernard van Dieren: Works for Voice & Chamber Orchestra [CD]

Matthew Long – Bernard van Dieren: Works for Voice & Chamber Orchestra [CD]

Bernard van Dieren (1887-1936) was an Anglo-Dutch polymath: composer, violinist, calligrapher, bookbinder, critic, photographer and marksman. Based in London from 1909, he had a small band of devoted supporters, but his intensely argued music baffled most listeners and has rarely been heard since his early death.

This pioneering recording reveals a voice between Busoni and early Schoenberg, tonal but chromatically daring, long lyrical lines woven through intricate counterpoint, and far warmer and more playful than his intellectual reputation suggests. Single CD on Toccata Classics.

Genre: Chamber Music, Classical.
