Life's Too Good [Clear Vinyl]
Life's Too Good, released in April 1988, was the first album by the Icelandic alternative rock-pop band The Sugarcubes, which brought fame to lead vocalist Björk. Through the first single, "Birthday," the Sugarcubes received attention in Europe and the United States. Emerging from the ashes of K.U.K.L and signed to One Little Indian in 1987, over the next six years The Sugarcubes achieved an unprecedented level of success for an Icelandic band. It's sometimes hard to recall now just how much of an impact The Sugarcubes' debut single, "Birthday," made when its magical off-kilter melody first hit the airwaves via John Peel's show in the latter part of 1987. In particular, the song's extraordinary singer/narrator Björk was the subject of much wild speculation in the UK music press. "Can she possibly be human?," wondered Melody Maker's foaming Single of the Week review (repeated in NME). "A record of debilitating beauty," it continued. "Nothing this year has had us more thoroughly vanquished."
