Beginning in 2006 with “It’s Right to Be Civil”, Marc Mac quietly embarked on what has become one of the most original long-form projects in contemporary independent music. Across six volumes (“It’s Right to Be Civil”, “Extend the Knowledge”, “Message From Soulville”, “Generation X”, “All Power to the People”, and “The Invisible Soldiers”) the soundbites drop names and instances that allow the listener to explore further. Rather than sampling history for effect, Marc Mac built beats around it, armed with a sampling drum machine (MPC) and Logic Pro, every beat serves the narrative. Musically, the series is unmistakably Marc Mac in his beat mode. Boom Bap, Jazz, and Soul. A mixtape aesthetic remains central to the project.
