Originally released in April 1996, Exploded Drawing was generally received as Polvo’s White Album, the moment when the band finally kicked off its shoes, cracked the studio windows, and unleashed a long suite of songs showcasing the band’s true range. This double LP gives it all up: paranoid blues rants, Delhi-via-the-Ozarks hoedowns, spaghetti western lopers, carnivalesque boogie, a blazing, frustrated finale, and as always, that guitar sound. It’s just a little off, twisted, tweaked, coming at us from some pangaeic realm we still haven’t located so many years later, and probably never will.

A few things you may not know about Polvo: Childhood pals Steve and Dave met Ash and Eddie at the University of North Carolina in 1989. Exploded Drawing was recorded outside of Boston at Squid Hell Studios by Mr. Robert Weston IV in October 1995. This was their first record for Touch and Go Records. Polvo have toured with Sonic Youth and Superchunk. Dave Brylawski plays guitar and sings as does Ash Bowie. Steve Popson plays bass and Eddie Watkins plays the drums. Dave did social work with head-injury adults. Ash was in the band Helium. Eddie was a pastry chef at an Italian restaurant. Steve used to own his own arcade. That’s Polvo.
