Hyperpop to the rockers, rock to the hyper-poppers, and
god knows what to the general populace, saoirse dream
is the solo project of Portland-based popstar Catherine
Egbert. After cutting her teeth in a handful of touring
DIY bands, Catherine found a home in the flourishing
online hyperpop community. Blending the gritty
alt-rock of her roots with the candy-coated electronics
of her contemporaries, Egbert has emerged as a
cult-beloved star of the scene.
The third album from Portland-based artist Catherine
Egbert. saoirse dream’s sound is perhaps best described
as “wizard sleaze.” Alchemizing the alt-rock of her
roots with the bitcrushed digitalisms of her
contemporaries, Egbert conjures a spellbinding sonic
aesthetic. Chiptune synths dance like fairies across an
obsidian pool of distortion. As if they were components
to some powerful spell, each note is arranged with
ritualistic intent, the end-result more devastating than
any common curse. With the cutting honesty of Lindsey
Jordan, the virtuosic production chops of underscores,
and the pixelated aural world of Anamanaguchi, ’tis
only a matter of time ‘fore the heroes of this realm fall
victim to the thrall of saoirse dream.
