The debut LP from Swiss-born, NYC-based composer Mauro Hertig's Xol Meissner alias. A departure from his previous work, which is well known in classical circles, Hertig here has created a sinister, dreamlike world of sound with his unique hammered lap-steel technique and a velvety baritone croon that at times evokes Scott Walker. His lyrics are surreal and mythic, with horse hearts ripped out, kisses over a pharaoh's tomb, leering voyeurs, wine glasses full of tears. Built on the twin columns of Meissner's voice and the aforementioned hammered lap steel, Excess of Loss is an eerie, Lynchian vision and a unique Freudian trip. Excess of Loss was recorded at legendary Future-Past Studios in Upstate New York, with its founder Patrick Higgins [Zs, Aeaea) engineering and producing.
