Ensemble 1700 – Steffani: Orlando Generoso [3CD]
Agostino Steffani's opera Orlando generoso (Hanover, 1691) draws on Ariosto's Orlando furioso, spinning fantasy, adventure and tangled love into Baroque musical theater. Orlando, Angelica, Medoro and Bradamante are caught between raging jealousy, forbidden love and manipulative sorcery.
Dorothee Oberlinger leads Ensemble 1700 in a recording of the acclaimed 2025 production at the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, staged by Jean Renshaw. It makes a strong case for Steffani as one of the key opera composers between Cavalli and Handel. A complete 3CD set from Prospero Classical.
Genre: Baroque, Classical, Opera.
