This is the very definition of unexpected joy: the arrival of a "new release" from Ryo Fukui.

Recorded on June 26th, 2004, this live performance commemorates the 9th anniversary of the jazz club "Slow Boat," which Fukui himself founded and used as his home base. The trio features Ryo Fukui (piano), Benisuke Sakai (bass), and Yoshihito Eto (drums). At the time, Fukui was 56 years old. His performance is powerful and expansive, yet marked by sensitivity and clarity. In terms of balance-spirit, stamina, and technique-it was clearly a period of maturity. He renders the works of his idols Phineas Newborn Jr. and Tommy Flanagan with richness and elegance, and delivers a thrilling take on Wayne Shorter, who inspired him in his youth. A magnificent performance that captures Fukui at the height of his musical powers. "Slow Boat," which opened in June 1995, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
