"MOVEMENTS Vol. 13" – A bag full of rare rhythm & blues, raw funk, and pre-disco. Music history wasn’t written solely by the major record labels. Beyond the charts, a vibrant scene of independent musicians, producers, and small labels emerged in the 1960s and 70s, whose recordings are now among the most fascinating discoveries in the history of soul, funk, and R&B. Often with no prospect of commercial success, they created their music with remarkable determination—uncompromisingly and on their own terms. For many of these artists, this was the only way. They founded their own labels, financed studio time with their savings, organized the production of the singles, and handled distribution and promotion themselves. The finished 45s were sold at concerts, sent to local radio stations, or offered at neighborhood record stores. Pressings typically numbered around 500 copies—too few to garner nationwide attention, but enough to bring their music to life in local scenes. As musical trends changed, many of these singles fell into obscurity. Tramp Records is one of the few German music labels that refuses to accept this. On the contrary, they invest vast amounts of time, energy, and money to ensure that this obscure music isn’t forgotten. Collectors and DJs are also doing their part. However, it is labels like Tramp Records whose dedication ensures that this music remains accessible to the next generation. Names like Joe Nathune, John Laughter, Williams Brothers, or Thom Eassy would otherwise vanish into the depths of music history. The “Movements” series has rightfully become the flagship release of Tramp Records. For more than twenty-three years, label founder Tobias Kirmayer has personally dedicated himself to uncovering these hidden musical treasures with unwavering passion and meticulous attention to detail.
