Lekeu: French Cello Sonatas Vol. 5 [CD]

Marina Tarasova – Lekeu: French Cello Sonatas Vol. 5 [CD]

The fifth volume of the French Cello Sonatas series features the magnificent Cello Sonata in F major by Guillaume Lekeu (1870-1894), a pupil of César Franck and Vincent d'Indy who died of typhoid at just 24. Written when he was only eighteen, the four-movement sonata shows astonishing maturity, with long singing melodies, chromatic harmony and a deeply introspective mood.

It is paired with the haunting Larghetto for cello and orchestra, heard in the version for cello and piano. Marina Tarasova and Ivan Sokolov, whose earlier volumes won enthusiastic praise in Fanfare, perform on CD for Brilliant Classics.

Genre: Chamber Music, Classical, Romantic.
