Jazzy Soul 1961-1962 [CD]

Marvin Gaye – Jazzy Soul 1961-1962 [CD]

Marvin Gaye's earliest recordings for Tamla, compiled by Olivier Julien. Before the hits, Gaye was a crooner in the mold of Nat King Cole, and his 1961 debut The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye set his elegant voice to standards like My Funny Valentine, Witchcraft, Love for Sale and How High the Moon.

Berry Gordy soon steered him toward a more direct soul sound, heard on the 1962 singles collected here, including his first hits Stubborn Kind of Fellow and Hitch Hike, plus Sandman and Soldier's Plea. A fascinating CD portrait of a great singer finding his voice, from France's Frémeaux Heritage.

Genre: R&B, Soul, Vocal Jazz.
