Gebauer: Three Wind Quintets [CD]

Milan Wind Quintet – Gebauer: Three Wind Quintets [CD]

François-René Gebauer (1773-1845) was a leading French bassoonist, a pupil of François Devienne, a member of the Paris Opéra orchestra for over two decades and a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. His Three Wind Quintets for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon date from the early days of the wind quintet as a genre.

Rooted in the Classical style of Haydn and Mozart but tinged with early Romantic drama, they give each instrument a chance to shine while keeping a balanced conversation; the Third Quintet in C minor is the most expressive of the set. Played by the Milan Wind Quintet with clarinetist Luigi Magistrelli, on CD from Brilliant Classics.

Genre: Chamber Music, Classical.
