El Increible Reggay [LP]

Ely Combo - El Increible Reggay [LP]

Saxophonist Eliseo Pech came from a Yucatán family steeped in music and settled in Quintana Roo near the Belize border, where ska and reggae drifted in. His early-'70s band Ely Combo, joined by Belizean singer Anthony Jones, became one of the first Mexican groups to take on Jamaican rhythms, a true oddity in Latin American music of the era. Their 1972 debut turns Isaac Hayes' "Shaft" and Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself" into reggae, alongside Jamaican tunes from Byron Lee's Dragonaires songbook.

A vinyl LP reissue of the band's first album, from Vampisoul.
