18 months since Service Station at the End of the Universe and Antony Szmierek is already operating at a different altitude. Where the debut felt like a man working something out alone in a room, Decoding Birdsong opens the windows (quite literally to contributors Los Bitchos, Pretty Girl, 1-800 GIRLS) without losing any of the conversational intimacy that made him stand out in the first place. The concept, which is treating coincidence as a kind of secular religion, sounds like it could tip into pretension but never does. A heron, an angling superstore, Godzilla, late-night television - Szmierek finds the emotional weight in all the unlikely places and that's the point. 'Bookie's Favourite' and 'Flight Simulator' are the kind of weird and wonderful tracks you replay to check you heard them right. Don't miss this one.
