Cambini: String Quintets Op. 13 [CD]

Serenissima Ensemble – Cambini: String Quintets Op. 13 [CD]

Giuseppe Maria Cambini lived a mysterious life and may have been a pioneer in shaping the string quartet. His output includes sinfonie concertanti, sonatas for various ensembles, and many string quartets and quintets, most of the latter held in a library in Washington.

These quintets deserve rediscovery for the way they blend a pre-Schubertian lyricism, with echoes of the Baroque and of Boccherini, with a sonata form that anticipates later Romantic developments. Performed by the Serenissima Ensemble on CD from Urania Records.

Genre: Chamber Music, Classical.
