Black Light District: A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room [2LP]

Coil – Black Light District: A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room [2LP]

As Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson and John Balance brought Drew McDowall into Coil, the group took a turn toward the metaphysical, filtering their identity through the alias Black Light District with help from their "real life" members, guises and spiritual collaborators. Recorded in the winter of 1995/96, A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room leans on Coil's avant-garde and academic interests rather than their industrial roots. It opens with "Unprepared Piano", an obvious nod to John Cage, then leaves behind the pop rhythms of albums like Love's Secret Domain for looping melancholy and ghostly electronic textures, where sounds blur and performers seem to appear from the ether.

Dais Records' official reissue was remastered by Josh Bonati under the supervision of Coil's Drew McDowall. This 2023 edition is re-cut by Bonati and pressed as a double LP in a matte 24pt gatefold jacket.

Genre: Ambient, Electronic, Experimental, Industrial.
