Once called "the most ambitious record ever assembled for a TV soundtrack" by Entertainment Weekly, the compilation features rare tracks from Foo Fighters, Filter, Sheryl Crow, and more.

Executive album producers Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files, and David Was of Was (Not Was) covered all the bases when choosing the songs for this release, including the fun hidden tracks 90s CD owners had to rewind to access. The lineup spans Mark Snow, Soul Coughing, Foo Fighters, William S. Burroughs, R.E.M., Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Frank Black, Danzig, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Elvis Costello, and Brian Eno, plus tracks from Sheryl Crow, Filter, Meat Puppets, Rob Zombie & Alice Cooper, and P.M. Dawn — all making their first appearance on vinyl.

This release is limited to 3,000 copies across three themed color variants, limited to 1,000 copies per color. This is the Black Oil colorway.
