Originally released in 1968, the album was Parton’s first solo release for RCA Victor and showcased her emerging ability to tackle love, heartbreak, gender expectations and the realities of womanhood with remarkable candor.

At the center is the groundbreaking title track, “Just Because I’m a Woman,” a pointed rejection of the double standards placed on women in relationships. Written by Parton from personal experience, the song became a Top 20 country hit and remains one of the earliest examples of the fearless, autobiographical songwriting that would define her career. Elsewhere, Parton displays both vulnerability and wit on “The Bridge,” “You’re Gonna Be Sorry,” “False Eyelashes” and the wonderfully titled “I’ll Oilwells Love You.”
