Les Baxter's 1961 orchestral album Jewels of the Sea is a fantasy of the deep, inspired by mermaids, sea nymphs, sunken ships and lost Atlantis. Strings and percussion meet electric organ and keyboards, vibraphone floats over hazy string beds, and the eerie, theremin-like Ondioline takes centre stage, joined by rippling harps, a wordless choir and flutes. All originals except "The Enchanted Sea," adapted from Debussy's La mer.
