Alice Phoebe Lou’s Shelter is an intimate, warm-hearted exploration of love, vulnerability, independence and learning to create a sense of safety within yourself. Released in 2023, the nine-song album is the South African-born, Berlin-based singer-songwriter’s fifth studio record and was written entirely by Lou, with production, mixing and mastering by longtime collaborator David Parry.

Across Shelter, Lou pairs her distinctive, expressive vocals with dreamy guitars, gentle piano, hazy psychedelic textures and understated grooves. The title track turns inward toward self-preservation and trusting one’s own instincts, while “Open My Door” explores reclaiming the parts of yourself given away to others. Songs including “Angel,” “Lose My Head,” “Lately,” “Shine” and the expansive “Hammer” move between romantic longing, self-discovery and the exhilarating uncertainty of opening yourself up to love.

Recorded with a close-knit group of musicians including Ziv Yamin, David Parry, Daklis, Sam Burton and Connor Gallaher, Shelter captures the loose, personal spirit that has defined Lou’s fiercely independent career.
