"While Charles Band's 1982 sci-fi horror flick Parasite may primarily be remembered as one of Demi Moore's first big roles, Richard Band's evocative score is also a standout. The Band bros' approach to lo-fi filmmaking often meant using a sizable portion of the budget to make a large-scale score in lieu of large-scale effects, sets, and other visual elements. The placement of Band's music in the sound mix always meant that the movies felt like a million bucks, even when they looked like less than a fraction of that. It also helped that Richard Band always had a knack for scoring genre fare with a large orchestra (à la Ghoulies and Mutant). In Parasite, you can hear echoes of Jerry Goldsmith's Alien, including the use of dissonant strings, unusual percussion, and buzzing brass, which befits the movie's stomach-bursting titular creature.
