Baxter Dury & Etienne De Crecy & De - B.E.D [LP]

Back in 2017, Baxter Dury was spending weekends in Paris, and thoroughly "enjoying" himself. As part of these trips, he worked on new music with French producer Etienne De Crecy and roped in Delilah Holliday from Skinny Girl Diet to provide vocals for a truly collaborative effort. The result is a stripped back album full of simple bass and beats, while Dury and Holliday do their version of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin over the top. Their version is distinctly more grubby, less a dangerous liaison, more of a quickie in a travelodge after a knees up on the town. There's not a lot of love at play on these songs, just a hint of regret that follows the fun. Take 'How Do You Make Me Feel' which, musically at least, has a spring in its step. That's juxtaposed with Dury noting with a distance in his delivery "late love in a horrible hotel room, then we pretend to say goodbye". 'Only My Honesty Matters' finds Dury smoking roll ups and listening to Florence And The Machine, and he's in a subdued, reflective mood, where nobody can do anything right. 'Centipedes' pokes at the heart of the album, while everyone else is dancing Dury's music to himself "Don't you think that broken love is all we got". As an encapsulation of recovering from a failed relationship, Bed is about as good a companion as you could hope for.
