Arte Minima – Liber Primus Epigramatum - Motets in 5 Parts [2CD]

Vicente Lusitano, born around 1520 in Olivença, is hardly known today, yet he may be the most important composer in Portuguese history and probably the first Black composer whose works appeared in print. A priest who traveled to Rome with the Portuguese papal ambassador, he made his name as a theorist before converting to Protestantism and disappearing into France and Germany.

His Liber primus epigramatum (Rome, 1551) collects 23 sacred motets with direct references to Josquin. Ensemble Arte Minima's world premiere recording continues here with sixteen motets for five voices, on 2CD from Note One.

Genre: Choral, Classical, Renaissance.
