Steve Bates - An Infinite Antenna [LP]
Montréal-based sound artist Steve Bates expands his strategies and stylistic influences on An Infinite Antenna, his second solo album for Constellation, giving freer reign to melodic components and textural dynamics: leftfield synth work, deconstructed drum machine, pointillist electric guitar, and radiostatic blur are all part of the new brew swirling around his bruitist signal-bending and field-recording sensibility.
Coming out of the anarcho-punk scene of the Canadian Prairies in the 1990s, Bates founded Winnipeg's experimental sound festival Send + Receive in 1998 before moving to Montréal to become Sound Coordinator at Hexagram (Concordia University). Incorporating source recordings made throughout 2023-2025, including at artist residencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Greece, and Saskatchewan, An Infinite Antenna combines Bates' idea of slowly scanning a radio dial with a soundworld of recurring timbral and textural touchstones that forge an integrated whole.
