Can a man kill with nothing but a shout? The mysterious Crossley (Alan Bates) claims he learned the power from an Aboriginal shaman, and when he talks his way into the English country home of experimental composer Anthony Fielding (John Hurt) and his wife Rachel (Susannah York), his deadly scream may not be his only hold over them. Rachel soon falls under his spell.
Adapted from a story by Robert Graves, Jerzy Skolimowski's eerie, elliptical 1978 psychological horror film shared the Grand Prix at Cannes. With Tim Curry, Robert Stephens and a young Jim Broadbent, it's a strange, unsettling and utterly singular slice of British cinema, now in the Criterion Collection.
