Finally being repressed after almost two decades of utterly absurd mark-ups on Discogs, and arriving just in time for their Crystal Palace Park legacy show this summer, A Weekend In The City served as the seminal sophomore full-length from homegrown post-punk heroes Bloc Party. Originally released in 2007 as follow up to their still much adored 2005 debut LP Silent Alarm, the initially misunderstood successor exuded a rectifying of every gripe primary songwriter Kele Okereke had with the band's first attempt. While switching out lyrical opaqueness for specificity and clarity led to far darker, more vulnerable and personal subject matter unpacking drug abuse, failed relationships, grief and the faux nature of the industry they were now immersed in, the band would also sonically stray from the polished landfill indie style that began to clog airways and festival stages, and begin to embrace elements of art rock, synthpop and electro-punk. These experiments would ultimately alter the course of their career trajectory, and while legions will continue to argue that Bloc Party peaked with their debut, you'll always find an equal number of voices on the other side of the pulpit who insist that once the training wheels were removed, A Weekend In The City was the sound of a band truly discovering themselves and their untapped potential.
