While its individual components take the form of traditional music, the overall work is a magnificent, inexplicable chaos.\nBorn in the United States and emigrated to Australia in 1975, Bert is an accomplished composer, performer, writer, instrument maker, and educator who has spent many years exploring the live interaction between aesthetic elements such as technology, microtones, and improvisation, and machine processes, creating works that are sometimes humorous and unconventional. Known for his keen yet approachable musical intelligence, he constructs and wanders through machine-generated musical environments, exploring the resulting possibilities, but never resulting in a sense of alienation or nihilism driven by technology. This work features excerpts from the final three movements of \"A Kind of Spice,\" a nearly six-hour-long piece for computer-controlled synthesizers composed between 1990 and 1991, which explores a magical intermediate space between human and machine. Dedicated to Kenneth Gabro, this music draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including Sun Ra, Elliott Carter, Quincy Jones' \"Setembro,\" Charles Ives, the Portsmouth Sinfonia, and ancient Greek modes. While it features the pitch progressions of \"traditional music,\" delicate sustained tones, and a diverse yet powerful soundscape, it is output with deliberately chosen, somewhat cheap-sounding synthesized tones, becoming special through the composer's (and the audience's) attitude of embracing the beauty of unexpected \"mistakes.\" The LP's A-side track is an edited version, while the CD contains the full-length version. It also includes a very interesting commentary by the composer himself.\n1.
